2011-2012 Program Schedule

(Meetings are held at the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Hwy., the 2nd Wednesday of each month, September through May, and begin at 7:00 p.m.)

Sept. 14 American Dance Center.   Co-founder and artistic director Jack Villari will tell us   about the fascinating 40-year history of the dance school that serves as a springboard   for gifted area dancers.

Oct. 12  Illinois Ghosts.  Author and paranormal investigator Terry Fisk examines haunted   locations in Illinois and discusses case histories, eyewitness accounts, and ghost lore.

Nov. 9  Art Glass & More.  Chris Carter, owner of Homewood’s art glass store, discusses   the history, current and past locations of the long-time business, and classes being    offered.

Dec. 14 The History of the Chicago Bears. Hear the story behind “da Bears” from none    other than Senior Director Pat McCaskey, and help us celebrate HHS’s 31st birthday.

Jan. 11  The Ten Worst Civil War Generals.  You’ve heard the best … now hear about the   rest!  Author and professor of history Bruce Allardice examines the reasons why    some of our Civil War generals failed to justify their promotions to high rank.

Feb. 8  Steve Nemitz & Family.  Steve Nemitz talks about his family, businesses, and    business locations.

Mar. 14 “Mardi Gras:  The 300 Year Old Illinois French Creole Tradition.”  Dennis    Stroughmatt, noted folklorist and fiddler, talks about the cherished cultural tradition   that long has been practiced by Creoles in Illinois.  This program is made possible in   part by an award from The Illinois Humanities Council, The National Endowment   for the Humanities, and The Illinois General Assembly.

Apr. 11 The Civil War in Miniature.  Collette Renfro, owner of Blackberry Harvest    Dollhouse Museum and Shoppe, shares with us her reconstruction of Civil War    history in miniature.

May 9  Annual Meeting.  Presentation of Annual Reports and installation of 2012-2013    officers, followed by a social hour and refreshments.

May 11   ANNUAL MEETING.  Presentation of Annual Reports and installation of  2011-2012 officers, followed by a social hour and refreshments.
